"Rightists": Right the Wrong Now
Intellectuals and officials who were denounced as "Rightists" in 1957 write an open letter to the Party and demand:-
(In translation)
1. Lift the restrictions on freedom of speech. Let people reflect the history of Anti-Rightist Movement. Dig out the root of the mistaken political campaigns. Protect the development of our democracy with institutions.2. The Party's Central Committee should solemnly declare the Anti-Rightist Movement to be a gross violation of the constitution of our country and a mistaken political movement. Ludicrous self-deception like "Anti-Rightist was correct and necessary; the only problem was the extension" should have no place in the history of our republic.
3. Compensate the intellectuals and officials who were sacked, faced "re-education through labour" or even lost their families during the Anti-Rightist Movement; and who are living desperately. At least they should have the legal rights to live without worry.

The letter signers, between the ages of 69 and 89, include Zhong Peizhang (retired official of the Propaganda Department) and Mao Yushi (economist).
Ren Zhong, one of the "Rightists" who initiates this open letter, told Hong Kong's Ming Pao that their motives were very simple: They have suffered quite a lot for 50 years. It is not possible to wait for another 50 years. They demand justice before they die.
Ren is not worried about the consequence: "This is the 50th anniversary of the Anti-Rightist Movement. We have nothing to hide. We believe the leaders who promote 'three represents', 'people-oriented' and 'the concept of scientific development' as well as noble men will agree to our demands, which is lawful and reasonable."
