United Airlines won the right to operate the first direct flight between Washington and Beijing (AP via Washington Post). The Washington Times had an rather amusing commentary:
European and Asian capitals already enjoy direct access to Beijing and the opportunities it provides. Tehran ... and Pyongyang have direct service to Beijing ... The capital of the United States belongs on that list.
