Richard Li & Hong Kong Economic Journal

(UPDATE 10) Richard Li explains the HKEJ deal. I have written an obituary (cn) for the intellectual-run journal. Hong Kong bloggers are mourning: 1, 2, 3 (cn).

Hong Kong tycoon to buy the city's only intellectual and independent Chinese newspaper. What do the Hong Kong bloggers think?

Richard Li HKEJ Next Magazine Saving journal

... Blog readers suggest setting up a "Saving Journal Fund" ... It is not difficult to have a media that people fear, but to have a media like the Economic Journal which people would want to save is not easy. I think, if someday the Apple Daily is sold, readers would give up reading newspaper at most ...

MO's Review Reborn

Sale of Hong Kong Economic Journal: Objection

I write for the Economic Journal and I fear no corporations. How dare a general computer magazine allow a columnist to conflict with technology company PR? How dare a general computer magazine allow such writer to prejudice advertisers' business interests?

Richard Li is no intellectual. Unlike Jimmy Lai, he has no dedication to democratic movement. I don't think he can preserve the finest tradition of the Economic Journal. God know how he can guarantee not to interfere with editors. I don't think Richard Li can tolerate Kong Shaolin [pinyin], Fong Cheuk-yu or me, who have criticised PCCW from time to time. Besides, PCCW's second largest shareholder is China Netcom, I don't think [after the sale] Economic Journal can tolerate columnists like Mao Mengjing [pinyin] who criticise Chinese government candidly.

Miss Lee In Summer

The days without Economic Journal

... Call it vainglory. Among the 7 million people, I am one of the 50,000. Reading the Economic Journal on the underground is much more bourgeois than holding a copy of free newspaper. At the newsstand, to say "I want a copy of Hong Kong Economic Journal" is so powerful. When the newspaper seller tells me it sold out, I wrinkle up, showing that I am "so minority" ...

Reading Economic Journal is indeed very adequate. I don't need to read "where-the-car-crash-took-place-who-fell-from-high-place-who-was-raped" repeatedly everyday ...

Glycyrrhiza & Berberina

Hong Kong Economic Journal has a reputation of few pages, few advertisements. But it is not cheap. It is therefore not an ideal choice for starting fire for BBQ. Only the intellectuals who don't BBQ and prefer to drink red wine and have vegetarian meal at home like to buy and read. The layout of the Economic Journal is unique. When the major newspapers are chasing for images, colours, entertainment and leisure contents, it believes the reverse and sells nothing but words. It is difficult to comprehend and full of economics. Buy a copy and hang around, people will look at you respectfully, thinking that you are cultivated. I also like to hold the newspaper to pretend to be a cultured person. Especially for strange people like me, I will look very professional.

Sale of Economic Journal

Ming Pao Front Page: Hong Kong Economic JournalThe history of intellectual-run newspapers comes to an end. It is an era of businessmen/state-run newspapers. I am afraid that it would be more difficult to have speeches against the authority and magnates ...

Lin Xingzhi [the founder and major shareholder of the Economic Journal] has equated the Economic Journal and himself. He has never thought of turning the Economic Journal to a newspaper heritage which could be inherited by succeeding generations. Simply put, Lin Xingzhi without the Economic Journal is still a brand and the game is not over, but the Economic Journal without Lin Xingzhi is certainly not different from Ming Pao and Sing Tao ...

... To my surprise today's Apple Daily has no coverage of the sale of the Economic Journal, with only a Li Bafang column [LfC: a political gossip column of the Apple Daily]. I knew a boss has fought hard for it, but somebody was unwilling to report the news. It is on Ming Pao's front page! Jimmy Lai wants reform?! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Tsoi Tung-hoo has recently wrote [in his column in the Economic Journal] that newspaper is good business. But he refused Lok Yau-mui's invitation to manage the journal. What is he thinking?

HK Libertarian

Newspaper in the storm

I have listened to what the Central men said. Apparently they see the Economic Journal as Manchester United, and the Little Superman [LfC: Richard Li] is Malcolm Glazer.

Beijing-Hong Kong-Wuxi: Psychological problems of blog era

... Only after your agenda is Hongkong-ised, you can appreciate this beautiful free port. Every time when you hear the underground announcement "the next station is Tin Hau" you smile in your heart.
